Panluo City, located in Kashgar City, Kashgar Prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, is the site of a castle where the renowned Eastern Han general Ban Chao garrisoned for 17 years. It also served as the imperial palace of the Shule Kingdom, one of the Thirty-Six Kingdoms of the Western Regions. The present-day Panluo City, built on the site of the original ancient city, features a 3.6-meter-tall full-length statue of Ban Chao, depicting the story of how Ban Chao abandoned his pen to join the military, leading 36 warriors in a nighttime raid on Xiongnu envoys. Based in Shule, Ban Chao defeated the Xiongnu forces, completing the grand cause of unifying the Western Regions, restoring central government rule over the region, and reopening the Silk Road.
