The Hunan Provincial Museum is the largest history and art museum in Hunan Province, boasting a collection of over 180,000 items, particularly remarkable for its collections of artifacts from the Mawangdui Han Tomb, Shang and Zhou bronzes, Chu artifacts, ceramics from various dynasties, calligraphy and paintings, and modern and contemporary artifacts. Adjacent to the scenic Martyrs' Park, the museum covers 51,000 square meters, with 29,000 square meters of public buildings. Its collection includes silk paintings depicting imperial dragons, considered one of the twin masterpieces of pre-Qin painting, along with silk paintings depicting figures, dragons, and phoenixes. Its black-ground painted lacquer coffins are a classic example of Han Dynasty lacquer painting with cloud patterns. The museum's collection showcases discoveries in Hunan's history, culture, folklore, art, and natural resources. The museum is also a first-class national museum and a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
