Hunan University enjoys the reputation of "a millennium-old institution of learning, a century-old prestigious university." Hunan University's campus is nestled in the hillside, gradually expanding eastward from Yuelu Mountain to the banks of the Xiangjiang River. Yuelu Academy, academy that has weathered numerous wars and been destroyed and rebuilt seven times, remains primarily from the Ming and Qing dynasties, primarily in black and white. It is the largest existing academy complex in China.
