Wucai Mountain is one of the main scenic spots for viewing the autumn scenery of secondary forest in the Machang area. Originally named Yujia Mountain, the "Wucai" is a figurative term, as the actual color is more than just five.
There are more than ten kinds of shrubs in Wucai Mountain, more than ten kinds of mammals and more than thirty kinds of birds living and breeding in the forest. It is a natural ecological reserve with the most tree species, animals and birds in the area.
Because the Five-Colored Mountain is colorful and has distinct layers, many Chinese and foreign photography enthusiasts rush here to take pictures every autumn. Countless photos with the Five-Colored Mountain as the background have been published in Chinese and foreign newspapers and magazines, and nearly a hundred photos have won international awards.
From late September to early October every year , due to the effect of light frost, different tree species on the mountain show different colors due to their different cold resistance. The colorful mountain seems to be dressed in festive attire, with green pine, red oak, purple apricot, yellow and white birch and poplar ... a hundred colors of red, yellow, green, blue, and purple compete for beauty, and it is really "the mountains are all red, and the forests are dyed red."

Colorful Mountain is a unique geological site known for its vivid mineral-rich rock formations. It is significant due to its colorful landscape, which results from the weathering of sedimentary rock layers over millions of years. The site is also known for its importance in geological research and its appeal as a tourist destination.
Colorful Mountain is located in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia. It can be accessed by taxi from Chifeng's city center. Public transportation options are limited, so taking a taxi or private transport is recommended. The site is not easily reachable by metro, as Chifeng doesn't have a metro system.
The site is open year-round, but the best times to visit are from April to October, when the weather is mild and the colorful rock formations are most visible. Summer is the peak season, so if you prefer fewer crowds, visiting in early spring or late autumn is ideal.
The entrance fee typically ranges from 50 to 100 RMB, depending on the season and specific areas you wish to visit. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance or online via local tourism websites.
Booking tickets in advance is not strictly necessary, but it is recommended during peak seasons, particularly in summer. It is advisable to book a few days in advance to secure entry and avoid long queues.
Most visitors spend around 2 to 3 hours exploring Colorful Mountain, depending on the level of activity. If you plan to hike or take a guided tour, consider allocating a half-day for the visit.
Guided tours are available in Mandarin, and some may offer basic English services. Audio guides in Mandarin are also available for self-guided tours, though options in other languages may be limited.
Start with the main trail leading to the top of the mountain for the best views. Take time to explore the rock formations and the different colors of the mineral deposits. You can then continue hiking to other viewpoints for additional perspectives of the area.
There are no night visits or light shows at Colorful Mountain. The best time to visit is during the day, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the lighting enhances the colors of the landscape.
The site can get crowded during weekends and the peak summer months. For a more peaceful experience, visit on weekdays or during the off-peak seasons in early spring or late autumn.
Basic facilities, including toilets, water stations, and small food stalls, are available at the entrance. There are also a few rest areas along the trails where visitors can take breaks. Shops selling local souvenirs can also be found near the entrance.
The trails to the viewpoints can be steep and uneven, so the site may not be fully accessible for elderly or disabled visitors. However, children can enjoy the visit, especially with a shorter, easier route along the main entrance.
Both cash and mobile payments (such as Alipay and WeChat Pay) are accepted throughout the site, including at the entrance, food stalls, and souvenir shops.
There are several small local restaurants and food stalls offering traditional Inner Mongolian cuisine near the entrance. For more options, you can head to Chifeng City, which has a wider range of dining establishments.
Vegetarian and vegan options are limited, but some local dishes can be adapted for vegetarians. Halal food options may be available in Chifeng City, where there is a small Muslim community.
