Fenghuang East Main Street is a 3-meter-wide, over 3,000-meter-long, ancient street steeped in history. Its South Gate is the only intact city gate in northern Jiangsu. When repairing the city wall, Haizhou Prefect Huang Jinshao personally inscribed "Ancient Fenghuang City" on the gate. From the gate, the entire distance stretches northward for three li and ninety-nine steps, leading to the saying, "From the south end to the north end, a point appears every three li." Legend has it that the old street was once primarily inhabited by the three major families of Jiang, Yang, and Wu, each with their own specialties: the Wu family handled money, the Jiang family handled mouths, and the Yang family handled errands. Their mutual solidarity maintained the old street's long-term prosperity and stability.
