The Rock Line refers to the route taken by American explorer Rock from Muli to the Gongga Mountains during his expedition. Since vehicles still cannot pass through these areas, the only way to traverse them is on foot. He once wrote to a friend, "I would rather die in these beautiful mountains than in a cold hospital bed."
In March 1928, American explorer Joseph Rock set out from Muli, passed through Daocheng, Yading and other places, and went deep into the Gongga Ridge area. After crossing Daocheng and Yading twice, he published his articles and photos in the American National Geographic Magazine.
This route passes through the three major scenic areas of Yading, Daocheng, and Gongga, home to the ancient temples of Chonggu and Gongga, and features three sacred mountains of the Three Protectors (Eastern Peak, Xianuoduoji, 5,958 meters, representing Vajrapani, the master of the Tantric school; Southern Peak, Yangmaiyong, 5,958 meters, representing the great wisdom of Manjushri; and Northern Peak, Xiannairi, 6,032 meters, representing the great compassion of Avalokitesvara). To reach Mount Gongga, the route involves crossing two major passes at 4,800 meters (Xialuoduoji and Riwuqie), traversing the Moxi and Riwuqie gullies, and passing Gongga's numerous glaciers. The final destination is Kangding, the city of love songs, offering breathtaking scenery along the way.
