The Datong volcanic group is one of the six famous volcanic groups in my country, and with a total of more than 40 craters, it ranks first among all volcanic groups in the country. It is known as the "rare natural heritage of the East Asian continent" and is a rare and important geological historical relic. It is a famous Quaternary volcanic group in China. There are more than 30 known craters distributed in Yunzhou District and Yanggao County of Datong City, Shanxi Province.
The tallest and most famous volcanoes in the Datong volcanic group include Gelao Mountain, Heishan Mountain, Langwo Mountain, Jinshan Mountain, Pailou Mountain, Haotian Mountain, and Mati Mountain. They are all truncated cones sparsely scattered over an area of nearly one million square meters, and all of them are extinct volcanoes long ago.

The Datong Volcanic Group is a geological marvel, formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. The area is significant for its natural beauty and its role in understanding volcanic activity and landforms. It’s one of the best-preserved volcanic sites in China, with multiple craters, lava flows, and unique rock formations.
The Datong Volcanic Group is located near Datong in Shanxi Province. It can be reached by taxi or car from the Datong city center. Public transport options may be limited, so hiring a taxi or driving is recommended.
The site is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The best time to visit is during spring and autumn when the weather is mild. Avoid visiting in the summer to escape the heat and in winter due to possible snow and icy conditions.
The entrance fee is around 40 CNY. Tickets can be purchased on-site at the entrance or through online platforms if available. It's best to buy tickets on the spot to avoid any online service issues.
Booking tickets in advance is not necessary, but it is recommended during peak seasons (e.g., national holidays). Book at least a few days in advance if visiting during busy periods.
It takes about 2 to 3 hours to fully explore the volcanic group, including hiking and photography. If you plan to visit the museum and take your time, 4 hours would be ideal.

Night visits and light shows are not available at the Datong Volcanic Group. Daytime visits are the best way to experience the volcanic formations and landscapes.
The site can get crowded during weekends and national holidays. The least crowded times are weekday mornings, especially outside the peak tourist season (April to October).
Basic facilities like toilets and water stations are available at the site. There are also small rest areas and a few local shops selling snacks and souvenirs. It’s recommended to bring your own water and snacks for a more comfortable experience.
The site has some uneven terrain and steep areas, making it challenging for elderly or disabled visitors. Children can enjoy the site, but they should be supervised while hiking or exploring the volcanic formations.

Taxis or private cars are the best options to continue your journey after visiting. You can also take a bus to Datong city, which has more transportation options for further travel.
