The Xi'an Ancient City Wall, also known as the Xi'an Ming City Wall, is located in the heart of Xi'an. It is rectangular in shape, 12 meters high, 18 meters wide at the base, and 15 meters wide at the top. The east wall is 2,590 meters long, the west wall is 2,631.2 meters long, the south wall is 3,441.6 meters long, and the north wall is 3,241 meters long, with a total circumference of 11.9 kilometers. It has four gates: Changle Gate in the east, Anding Gate in the west, Yongning Gate in the south, and Anyuan Gate in the north.
The Xi'an City Wall was built on the foundations of the Tang Dynasty Imperial City. Designed with a strategic focus on defense, the wall's thickness is greater than its height, making it as solid as a mountain. Its summit was even suitable for driving cars and conducting drills. It includes a series of military installations, including a moat, drawbridge, gatehouse, watchtower, main tower, corner towers, enemy towers, parapets, and battlements. The well-preserved city wall, moat, and surrounding park form a major tourist attraction in Xi'an. The existing wall boasts a history of over 600 years and is one of the most famous city wall structures in late medieval Chinese history, making it the most complete surviving ancient city wall in China.
