Tea cultivation and processing have been carried out locally since the imperial decree during the Taihe period of the Tang Dynasty, when tea was widely planted. During the Song Dynasty, brick tea was once used as currency in the tea-horse trade with Mongolia. The Yangloudong Ancient Tea-Horse Road began in the Song Dynasty and flourished during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. By the beginning of the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, the tea-making industry had become quite developed, and the market town had sprung up. At its peak, there were more than 200 tea houses and a population of nearly 40,000. The ancient town had five main streets and more than a hundred commercial and inn stores. "Dong Tea" was exported to the border areas and overseas, and Yangloudong was known as the "Little Hankou".
