Autumn Moon over Calm Lake is one of the Ten Scenic Spots of West Lake. In the Southern Song Dynasty, it was listed as the third of the Ten Scenic Spots of West Lake. In the Yuan Dynasty, it was also called "Night Moon over West Lake" and included in the Ten Scenic Spots of Qiantang.
The "Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake" landscape refers to the following: whenever the autumn air is crisp, the surface of the West Lake is as calm as a mirror, the bright autumn moon is in the sky, and the moonlight and the lake water complement each other, giving a feeling of "the lake is covered with autumn lights", hence the name "Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake".
During the Southern Song Dynasty, there was no fixed location for viewing the Pinghu Autumn Moon. Instead, the most popular way to enjoy the autumn moon view was by boat on the lake. In the 38th year of the reign of Emperor Kangxi, Emperor Kangxi visited West Lake and inscribed the inscription "Pinghu Autumn Moon" on a plaque. From then on, the scenic spot became a fixed location.
Today, the Pinghu Autumn Moon Viewing Spot is located at the west end of Baidi Causeway, backed by Solitary Mountain and facing the Outer Lake.
