Midu County is located in the western Yunnan Plateau and southeastern Dali Prefecture. It borders Xiangyun and Nanhua Counties to the east, Jingdong and Nanjian Counties to the south, Weishan County to the west, and Dali City to the north. It is 320 kilometers east of the provincial capital, Kunming, 61 kilometers north of the prefecture capital, Xiaguan, and 144 kilometers south of the Manwan Hydropower Station. It is one of the source areas of the Red River and the heart of the Lancang River Middle Reaches Economic Belt. Anciently known as the "Throat of the Six Zhaos," it is a nationally renowned hometown for lanterns and folk songs. Famous lantern songs such as "Midu Mountain Songs," "Embroidered Purse," and "Ten Sisters" and the folk song "Little River Flowing Water," known as an oriental serenade, originated in Midu. In 2010, Midu folk songs from Yunnan Province's Midu County were inscribed on the third batch of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List, in the traditional music category, with the sixth entry.
