Tangyue Village, located in She County, Huangshan City, Anhui Province, is a Bao clan village whose descendants have relied on commerce for generations. The village is renowned for its memorial archway complex, consisting of seven archways facing each other, representing loyalty, filial piety, chastity, and righteousness. These archways, built during the Ming and Qing dynasties, honor the Tangyue people's loyalty, filial piety, chastity, and righteousness.
Each memorial archway tells a moving story woven with emotion. When Emperor Qianlong visited the south of the Yangtze River, he lavishly praised the Bao family, the owners of the memorial archways, calling them " a village unparalleled in the world for its kindness and filial piety, and the most beautiful village in the south of the Yangtze River . "
The Tangyue Archway complex is a masterpiece of Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, boasting a blend of architectural styles that remain seamless despite spanning hundreds of years. The Tangyue Archway complex in She County departed from its traditional predominantly wooden structure and is now constructed almost entirely of stone, primarily the high-quality " Shexian Qing " stone.
This bluestone archway is solid, tall, majestic, and imposing. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the art of archway architecture reached new heights. Architectural experts believe that the Tangyue Archway is of great value in studying the politics, economy, culture, and architecture of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the formation and development of Huizhou merchants, and even local customs.
