
Maijishan Grottoes, dating back to the 4th century, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are significant for Buddhist art, featuring sculptures and murals that reflect Chinese, Indian, and Central Asian influences and provide insight into ancient Silk Road culture.
The grottoes are located near Tianshui city in Gansu Province. Visitors can reach the site by taxi, local bus, or organized tour from Tianshui. Walking paths connect different caves and scenic spots within the area.
Open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Spring and autumn are ideal for comfortable weather and fewer crowds.
The ticket price is approximately CNY 120 per person. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance or via official tourism websites and local travel agencies.
Booking in advance is recommended during peak tourist seasons or holidays, ideally a few days before the visit.
2–3 hours are sufficient to explore the grottoes, cliffside walkways, and nearby temples; longer if taking guided tours or photography.
Guided tours in Chinese and sometimes English are available. Audio guides are limited, mostly in Chinese.
Start at the visitor center, climb the stairways to the upper grottoes, walk along cliffside paths to middle and lower caves, then finish at scenic viewpoints and nearby temples.
Night visits are generally not permitted. Special tours may include cultural presentations or guided photography sessions during the day.
It can be crowded during Chinese public holidays and summer. Weekdays and off-season visits are less busy.
Facilities include toilets, snack stalls, rest areas, a visitor center, and souvenir shops near the entrance.
Cliffside paths and staircases may be challenging for elderly or disabled visitors. Children can visit safely under supervision. Some areas may have ramps for limited accessibility.
Both cash and mobile payments (Alipay, WeChat Pay) are widely accepted.
Several local restaurants and cafes are available near the visitor center, offering Chinese cuisine and light refreshments.
Vegetarian and halal options are available at local restaurants in Tianshui and near the site.
Accommodations are mainly in Tianshui city, ranging from guesthouses to mid-range hotels, about 15–20 km from the grottoes.
Souvenirs include miniature Buddha statues, postcards, silk scarves, and local handicrafts.
Taxis, tour buses, or private vehicles can return visitors to Tianshui city. From there, trains and buses connect to other destinations in Gansu Province.
