Changzhi, formerly known as Shangdang, Luzhou, and Lu'an Prefecture, was originally the name of the county where Lu'an Prefecture was located. The entire area is located in the Shangdang Basin, surrounded by the Taihang and Taiyue Mountains. Changzhi has a long history. In the 21st year of King Xian of Zhou (348 BC), the Kingdom of Korea first established Shangdang Commandery here. In the 26th year of King Zheng of Qin (221 BC), the Qin Dynasty unified the six kingdoms and divided the world into 36 prefectures, one of which was Shangdang Commandery. The city center still retains the Shangdang Gate, the main gate of the ancient Shangdang Prefecture, and the Lu'an Prefecture City God Temple, the largest existing City God Temple in China, with a central axis of 408 meters.
