In ancient times, the riverbanks were lined with tall pines, earning the county its name, "Hundred Miles of Pine Shade and Long Blue Creek," a phrase that inspired the name. In May 2000, Songxi County was designated the "Hometown of Chinese Folk Printmaking Art" by the Ministry of Culture. On July 22, 2016, Songxi County passed the Ministry of Environmental Protection's national ecological county assessment, becoming the first such county in northern Fujian.
