Yucheng boasts a long history and splendid culture. In the 21st century BC, Emperor Yu of Xia granted Shang Jun, the son of Emperor Shun, a fiefdom here, naming him "You Yu," later known as the State of Yu. Luncheng, located west of Yucheng, was an important capital during the middle period of the Xia Dynasty. Shang Tang conquered the Xia capital of Bo (now southwest of Gushu Town, Yucheng County), establishing the Shang Dynasty. The Qin Dynasty established Yu County, and in the 16th year of the Sui Dynasty's Kaihuang reign (596 AD). Yucheng has produced numerous talented individuals throughout history. It is the birthplace of Du Kang, the founder of winemaking; the place where Cangjie invented Chinese characters; and the hometown of the heroic heroine Hua Mulan. Many celebrities throughout history, including Sima Xiangru, Mei Cheng, Li Bai, Du Fu, Gao Shi, and Su Shi, have visited the area and left behind many beloved poems. The area currently houses such scenic spots and historical sites as the Tomb of Cangjie, the Tomb of Shang Jun, the Tomb of Yi Yin, and the Mulan Shrine.
