
Located at the junction of Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Anhui provinces, Shangqiu serves as the eastern gateway to Henan Province and one of the six central cities on the Chinese section of the Eurasian Continental Bridge. With a history spanning over 5,000 years, Shangqiu is known as the "Source of the Three Merchants and the Capital of Chinese Merchants" because merchants, commodities, and commerce originated there. The Shang Dynasty established its capital there, earning it the nickname "The Origin of the Three Merchants and the Capital of Chinese Merchants." It is a crucial birthplace of Chinese civilization and the Chinese nation, a capital of six dynasties, and a National Historical and Cultural City. As an ancient city with a thousand-year history, Shangqiu boasts numerous cultural relics and historical sites, including the Tomb of Suiren, the first of the Three Sovereigns of the Tang Dynasty; the Huoshen Terrace, the world's oldest astronomical observatory; the tomb of the Taoist master Zhuang Zhou; the Yingtian Academy, one of the four great academies in China during the Northern Song Dynasty; and the Shangqiu Ancient City, China's most well-preserved ancient city.
Shangqiu is one of China’s oldest cities, with a history dating back over 4,000 years. It was a major political, economic, and cultural center in ancient China and is known for its historic city wall, tombs, and Confucian heritage.
Shangqiu is located in eastern Henan Province. Visitors can reach the city by high-speed train, regular trains, long-distance buses, and taxis. Local buses and taxis can be used for inner-city travel; walking is convenient in central areas.
Major attractions like the Ancient City Wall, Confucius Temple, and museums are usually open from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Spring and autumn (March–May and September–November) are the most comfortable times to visit.
