Cat Ba Island is the only inhabited island in Long Bay and the largest of the islands under the jurisdiction of Haiphong City. It covers an area of 146 square kilometers and is mostly rocky. It is 20 kilometers from Haiphong and is accessible by ferry, making it wadingable at low tide.
Cat Ba Island boasts a vast expanse of primeval forest, designated a national nature reserve by the Vietnamese government. Home to numerous rare trees and home to a variety of exotic animals, the reserve is a vast natural zoo.
Cat Ba Island is a mountainous landscape, surrounded by a winding coastline and tranquil bays. Nestled between the rocky hills are a number of natural bathing beaches, named Cat Ba Island No. 1 through No. 3. Every summer, these beaches become a paradise for the public. Five kilometers from Cat Ba Town, nestled in a mountain, lies a cave called "Zhong Trang," which cuts through the rocky terrain and contains Neolithic relics.
