Located at the foot of Gele Mountain in Chongqing, 2.5 kilometers from Baigongguan, Zhazidong was originally a small coal mine on the outskirts of Chongqing, named for its abundance of slag and limited coal. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and a ravine on one side, Zhazidong is secluded. In 1939, Kuomintang (KMT) secret agents forced the mine owner to death, seized the mine, and established a prison there. The prison consisted of two courtyards: the outer courtyard housed the secret agents' offices and interrogation rooms, while the inner courtyard, with 16 rooms on the ground floor and the ground floor, served as a men's prison, with two bungalows serving as women's cells. Imprisoned here were revolutionaries arrested in the June 1st mass arrests, the "Little Revolutionary Revolution" case, the "Tianjin Daily" case, and the three failed armed uprisings in upper and lower eastern Sichuan, including Jiang Zhuyun, Xu Jianye, and He Xuesong. At its peak, the prison numbered over 300. "Little Radish Head" and his family also lived here. On November 27, 1949, on the eve of their rout, Kuomintang secret agents orchestrated a shocking massacre, from which only 15 people escaped. Some literary and artistic works such as "Eternal Life in the Flames", "Red Rock" and "Sister Jiang" are based on this.
