Mount Kawagebo, the main peak of Taizi Snow Mountain and the highest of the Eight Sacred Mountains in Tibet, is located in the world-renowned "Three Parallel Rivers" region. At 6,740 meters above sea level, it is the highest peak in Yunnan Province and recognized worldwide as the most beautiful snow-capped mountain, earning it the nickname "God of Snow Mountains." The glaciers of Mount Kawagebo are typical maritime glaciers, characterized by rapid movement and change. The instability of maritime glaciers makes them difficult to climb, making them still a virgin peak.
The best time to visit Mount Kawagebo is between October and May. During this period, the weather is fine, visibility is high, and the chance of the sacred mountain being obscured is very low. Once the rainy season arrives in June and July, your luck will be yours.

Kawagebo is the main peak of the Meili Snow Mountain range, sacred in Tibetan Buddhism. It is historically significant as a pilgrimage site and is known for its striking natural beauty, glaciers, and cultural importance to local Tibetan communities.
Kawagebo is located in the Meili Snow Mountain range near Zhongdian (Shangri-La), Yunnan. Visitors typically reach Zhongdian by bus or flight from major Yunnan cities like Lijiang or Kunming, then travel by local bus, taxi, or guided tour to the mountain base. Trekking on foot is required for exploring trails.
The area is accessible year-round, but the best time to visit is from October to May for clearer skies and favorable trekking conditions. Summer can be rainy and trails may be slippery.
A scenic area entrance fee applies, usually around 120–150 CNY. Tickets can be purchased at the park entrance or through local travel agencies; online booking may be available for tours.
Booking in advance is recommended during peak season (October–May). Reserve 1–2 weeks ahead to secure guided treks or park permits.
At least 2–3 days are recommended to explore the base area, villages, and trekking trails. Full summit climbs are restricted and require special permits.
Guided tours are available, often in Chinese and English. Audio guides are generally not available.
Start at the visitor center, visit nearby temples and villages, then follow marked trekking trails along rivers and meadows for mountain views. Overnight in village guesthouses if doing multi-day treks.
Night visits and light shows are not typical. Special guided treks and cultural tours can be arranged through local agencies.
Peak season (October–May) is moderately busy. Early mornings and weekdays are less crowded. Summer months are quieter but can be rainy.
Basic facilities are available near the visitor center and larger villages: toilets, small restaurants, tea houses, and rest areas. Shops sell local crafts and snacks.
Main viewing points are accessible by vehicle, but trekking trails are challenging and not recommended for elderly, very young children, or disabled visitors.
Cash is recommended, especially in remote areas. Mobile payments (Alipay, WeChat Pay) are accepted in larger villages; credit cards are limited.
Local Tibetan-style restaurants, tea houses, and small eateries in villages provide traditional meals and snacks.
