Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America, formerly a British colony known as British Guiana. It has a rich cultural mix of Indigenous, African, Indian, and European influences and is significant for its vast rainforests, biodiversity, and unique ecosystems.
Guyana is located on the northern coast of South America, bordered by Venezuela, Brazil, and Suriname. The main entry point is Cheddi Jagan International Airport near Georgetown. Domestic travel is typically by taxi, bus, small plane, or boat for remote areas.
The country is open year-round for tourism. The dry season from August to November is the best time to visit natural attractions like Kaieteur Falls and national parks, as rivers and trails are more accessible.
For guided tours, rainforest lodges, and Kaieteur Falls flights, booking at least a few weeks in advance is recommended, especially during peak travel season.
A comprehensive trip can range from 7 to 14 days, allowing for rainforest treks, waterfall visits, river tours, and time in Georgetown and other cultural sites.
Guided tours are widely available in English. Some lodges and tour operators offer bilingual guides, but English is the primary language for visitors.
Night tours may be offered in rainforest lodges for wildlife spotting. There are no traditional light shows; special tours are mainly eco and wildlife-focused.
Guyana is generally not crowded. Tourist spots like Kaieteur Falls are busier during the dry season. Weekdays and early morning departures help avoid small crowds.
Georgetown and some accessible lodges are suitable for all ages. Remote rainforest and waterfall sites may involve hiking or small plane access, which is challenging for elderly or disabled visitors.
Cash (Guyanese Dollar or USD) is widely needed, especially in remote areas. Larger hotels and urban businesses may accept cards, but mobile payments are limited.
Vegetarian and vegan options are available in Georgetown and some lodges. Halal food is limited; travelers may need to request in advance.
Souvenir shops in Georgetown sell crafts, wood carvings, local textiles, and eco-friendly products from the rainforest regions.
