Introducing Beihai Old Street

Beihai Old Street generally refers to Zhongshan Road and Zhuhai Road. Although it was established around 1927, its origins date back to the mid-19th century. Construction began in 1883, and the street is lined with distinctive arcade-style buildings that blend Chinese and Western styles.

Most of the buildings in the old street are two to three stories high, mainly influenced by Britain, France, Germany and other countries in the late 19th century. Along the street are the former sites of the British, French and German consulates, the former site of the German Senbao Trading Company and the former site of the Catholic Church Convent. There are also many Catholic churches, Gothic houses and other Western-style buildings standing nearby, witnessing the former prosperity of Beihai.

The old street has now been commercialized. Along the street are small shops selling various specialties, pearl shops, dessert shops, and herbal tea shops. There are also many cafes, bars and other places with a modern atmosphere.
