Yunding Stone City, 65 kilometers from Chengdu city , was originally a defensive castle built by Yu Jie, a famous general of the Southern Song Dynasty, in 1243 AD to resist the Mongolian army. It has now become a scenic spot consisting of Yunding Mountain, Tuojiang River "Little Three Gorges" and other scenic spots.
The city is the only surviving ancient castle in western Sichuan that was built during the late Southern Song Dynasty to resist the Yuan Dynasty. The combination of beautiful green mountains and clear waters with long-standing historical and cultural relics is a major feature of the scenic area. The temperament of the Southern Song Dynasty heroes who resisted the Yuan Dynasty coexists with the mountains and rivers here.
The mountain city is surrounded by eight gates, all built on steep cliffs. The majority of the city walls follow the mountain's slopes and cliffs, with stone slabs stacked to form walls. Battlements and artillery emplacements are located on the walls. Eighteen wells and 32 pools are located within the city . The entire stone city, situated on a high point, is easily defended and difficult to attack. The North Gate, Changning Gate, and other ancient buildings remain, covering approximately 5,000 square meters.
