The Suopo Ancient Watchtower Cluster, located in Danba County, Ganzi, Sichuan, is a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Site. Danba, known as the "Land of a Thousand Watchtowers," boasts towers scattered throughout the county, primarily concentrated along the banks of river valleys. They can be found in groups of three or five, or stand alone on hilltops. The towers interact with each other, forming a majestic cluster that follows the mountain's contours. In concentrated areas, dozens of towers can be seen stretching out in unison, forming a spectacular cluster.
The ancient watchtowers of Suopo Township date back thousands of years, leaving behind countless mystical legends. Constructed of mud and stone, these ancient watchtowers boast beautiful appearances and sturdy walls. While many are attached to residential buildings, some stand alone on plains or in valleys. They are typically tall, rectangular pillars, with some featuring four, five, or eight corners, and a few reaching thirteen. They typically stand at least ten meters tall, often around 30 meters, with some reaching 50 to 60 meters. Their uses ranged from defensive towers in wartime, fire towers for transmitting intelligence, feng shui towers for blessing and safety, to demon-suppressing towers for warding off evil spirits.
