The Mingyue Gorge plank road in Guangyuan, on the upper reaches of the Jialing River, is a famous relic of the ancient Shu Road. Mingyue Gorge, where the ancient plank road ruins are located, combines six ancient and modern roads: the Jialing River waterway, the pre-Qin plank road, the Baoji-Chengdu Railway, the tracker road, National Highway 108, and the Jinniu Post Road. It is known as the "China Road Traffic Museum" and a "living fossil" of Chinese road traffic.
The ancient plank road here is the most strategically located, the most scientifically constructed, the best preserved, and the most impressive of all the plank roads in China. The saying "Even the yellow cranes cannot fly over, while monkeys struggle to climb to cross" truly describes this perilous terrain.
Guangyuan has a folk tradition of offering sacrifices to Empress Wu Zetian on the 23rd day of the first lunar month every year. Traveling there in spring and autumn, in addition to enjoying the dragon boat races and temple fairs dedicated to Wu Zetian, you can also avoid the disastrous weather brought about by the continuous autumn rains during the rainy and hot seasons.
