The Xujiahuiyuan Scenic Area stretches from Wanping South Road, Tianping Road, and Huashan Road in the east, borders Zhongshan South Second Road in the south, Kaixuan Road in the west, and Huaihai West Road in the north. Xu Guangqi, a renowned Ming Dynasty minister and a pioneer in Sino-Western cultural exchange, once lived here, and his descendants later settled here, hence the name Xujiahui.
Under the leadership of Xu Guangqi, Catholicism began to spread and develop in Shanghai. Later, Xujiahui became an area with a strong Catholic atmosphere and European style. Today, you can still find various religious elements with a sense of age in the scenic spots of Xujiahui, such as the former site of Xujiahui Notre Dame Cathedral and the former site of Xuhui Public School founded by Catholic missionaries.
You can also visit the Xu Guangqi Memorial Hall, Shanghai's oldest existing residential building, listen to sacred music at Xujiahui Cathedral, Shanghai's largest Catholic church, or learn about the history of the Tushanwan Orphanage at the Tushanwan Museum. These attractions, etched with Xujiahui's history and culture, comprise the Xujiahui Source Scenic Area.
