Nanxiang Tanyuan, located in the center of Nanxiang Town, was the private garden of Li Liufang, a renowned Ming Dynasty writer and one of the " Four Masters of Jiading . " The garden boasts a compact and elegant layout, with a gourd-shaped pond at its center and halls surrounding it. Winding caves and gullies, and winding corridors traverse the garden, embodying the unique characteristics of Jiangnan private gardens. The garden creates a sense of transition between scenery with each step, creating a sense of being in a painting.
The design of Tanyuan utilizes a layered approach of obstruction and transparency to create a secluded, elusive visual experience. Centered around a water feature, the design employs a " central, multi-lateral " design pattern, separated from the bustling city life by high walls. The landscape, architecture, and plants are distributed naturally throughout the space.
Nanxiang Tanyuan fully utilizes the artistic principle of " seeing the big in the small " within a limited space , creating a garden pattern of " mountains and forests within reach, and beautiful scenery in all directions " .
