Gaoqiao, an ancient water town in the Jiangnan region, boasts a long history and rich cultural heritage. Despite its small size, surrounded by water on three sides, Gaoqiao has produced numerous celebrities and boasts numerous cultural relics. At the Gaoqiao History and Culture Exhibition Hall, you'll hear local stories, savor the charm of the ancient town, admire local treasures, and get up close and personal with its cultural heritage.

The exhibition hall features over 600 exhibits, 95% of which are authentic and mostly sourced from local folk art. The museum, divided into nearly 30 sections, condenses Gaoqiao's 870-year history and offers a comprehensive overview of its history, culture, production, life, and local customs. The museum is housed in Yangxian Hall, a district cultural relic protected by the district. Located on the shores of Gaoqiao Harbor, the hall boasts a beautiful blend of Chinese and Western styles. Admission is free.

Cross the Jijing Road Bridge and walk another ten minutes to the museum. The scenery along the way is very beautiful and has a quaint atmosphere. Many old houses are still preserved, such as the Zhong Family Residence, Du Yuesheng Family Ancestral Hall, Huang Family Residence, Jingye Hall, Yangxian Hall, and Yin Family Garden.

Climate and best time to travel

In the subtropical monsoon climate of March, I spent a half-day in Gaoqiao Ancient Town. I wandered around, visiting attractions close to home, viewing paintings of the Qian School's maritime origins, pondering the mysteries of stone carvings, and marveling at the lifelike velvet embroidery. The texture of the old-style houses, the mahogany furniture, the layout and structure, the identities of the owners, and the furnishings within, reminisced about the past. Still wanting more, I walked down the cobblestone streets and spotted the Gaoqiao Pancake Shop—a box of freshly baked red bean paste pancakes. As I savored them, I couldn't leave again...
