Introducing Square Tower

The Songjiang Square Pagoda, formerly known as the Xingshengjiao Temple Pagoda, is located in Fangta Park in Songjiang District, Shanghai. Built within Xingshengjiao Temple between the Xining and Yuanyou periods of the Song Dynasty (1068-1094 AD), it is named the Xingshengjiao Temple Pagoda. With a history of over 900 years, it underwent extensive restoration between 1975 and 1977. A brick and wood structure, the 42.5-meter-tall pagoda features four sides and nine levels. Its square plan, nicknamed the "Square Pagoda," features large eaves and a slender tower, reflecting the architectural style of the heyday of the Tang Dynasty. It is now a nationally protected cultural relic.

Most of the brackets of Songjiang Square Pagoda are original ones from the Song Dynasty; the moon beams on the archways, the Arhat beams and the eaves beams on the outer eaves are all original ones. It is one of the ancient pagodas in Jiangnan that has preserved more original components. The top of the square pagoda is 7.85 meters high.
