Hasuhai, an oxbow lake left over from the shifting Yellow River, is a freshwater outflow lake belonging to the Daheihe River system. Formerly known as Taosihao West Lake and more commonly as Houbo'er, Hasuhai is a natural lake known as the "West Lake of the Great Wall." Located in Tumd Left Banner, 70 kilometers west of Hohhot, it covers 32 square kilometers and is approximately two meters deep. Its weed-covered bottom and fertile waters are abundant with grass carp, silver carp, carp, crucian carp, bighead carp, and Wuchang fish, as well as river shrimp and crabs. A variety of birds thrive in the reed marshes surrounding the lake, soaring and circling above the vast expanse. Pavilions and waterside terraces shaded by verdant willows, the azure waters and verdant mountains complement each other beautifully, creating a truly spectacular scene.
The surface of the Hasu Lake is covered with dense reeds and cattails, resembling small islands. Flocks of wild ducks frequent the reeds, which sway in the wind, making rustling sounds. In autumn and winter, the lake is harvested and the cattails resemble small hills.
Though a natural lake resembling jade, it was once a mere "backwater" of varying sizes, finally becoming a magnificent sight through the sculpting of generations. In other words, Hasu Lake, once completely cut off from the Yellow River's flow, was shaped into the vast expanse it is today by the hands of the Tuzuo Banner people.
In recent years, tourism has flourished, with the construction of pavilions, waterside pavilions, resorts, etc. Due to its convenient location on the south side of the Beijing-Baotou Railway and National Highway 110, it has become a tourist destination in the Tumochuan area and a pearl on the Tumochuan Plain.
Temperate continental climate; Hohhot is dry and windy in spring and cold in winter, which is not suitable for tourism. The best time to travel is from June to November.
