The Hanzhong Basin, including the Hanzhong Plain, hills and river valleys, is located in Hanzhong City in the southwest of Shaanxi Province. It is a basin between Mian County and Yang County in the upper reaches of the Han River. It is the upper reaches of the Han River between the Qinling Mountains and the Daba Mountains. It is a fault basin and is known as the "land of fish and rice and the home of national treasures."
In ancient times, there was a state called Bao. Liu Bang established his capital in Nanzheng as the King of Han, and later left the country to establish the Han Dynasty. Therefore, the local slogan "Birthplace of the Han Dynasty, Cornucopia of Chinese Treasures" is adopted. This couplet cleverly incorporates the four characters "Hanzhong Basin".
The basin has vast rivers, ponds and reservoirs, and a developed fishery, earning it the reputation of "the land of fish and rice". At the same time, the Hanzhong Basin is also home to the "four national treasures": the red-crowned crane, giant panda, golden monkey and takin, so the Hanzhong Basin is also known as the "home of national treasures".
The warm and humid subtropical climate of the ancient Sichuan Basin made it easy for the region to be self-sufficient and establish itself as a nation. Chang'an is very close to Sichuan, but the Hanzhong Basin lies in between, making it an easy springboard for invaders to reach Chang'an. Therefore, the Hanzhong Basin holds a crucial strategic position, which explains why Hanzhong, despite being considered a southwest cultural center, is included in Shaanxi. In spring, gazing at the vast sea of rapeseed blossoms and embracing nature is a truly wonderful place.
