South Lake, located at the southern end of Hongcun, was built in the Dingwei year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty . From the Yongle to the Wanli reign, Hongcun grew into a village with interconnected buildings of varying heights and a rapidly growing population. The Moon Pond alone was no longer sufficient for water storage. Therefore, in 1607 , a pond was dug several feet deep from a hundred acres of fertile farmland south of the village. Stone banks were built around it, modeled after the West Lake, known as the Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake. This lake was then constructed.
The lake is shaped like a large bow, with an upper and lower embankment. The upper embankment is four meters wide. Once upon a time, towering, lush trees, vines entwined their trunks, birds chirped, and weeping willows, their branches and leaves graceful, resembled a girl combing her hair in front of a mirror, spreading her hair into the water. Swaying green lotus leaves and ducks playing in the water create a unique scene.
The entire lake surface reflects the floating light, the water and sky are one color, the distant peaks and nearby houses fall into the lake, and the interaction of the shade of the trees, the depth of the water and the sunlight creates a harmonious combination of light and dark, and movement and stillness, making it appear deep, elegant, fresh and bright.
In the autumn of the Jiawu year of the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty, Wu Xilin, a famous scholar from Qiantang, Zhejiang (now Hangzhou), wrote an article after visiting Nanhu Lake: " The prosperity of Nanhu Lake in Hongcun is comparable to that of West Lake in Zhejiang Province . " Therefore, Nanhu Lake is also known as the " Little West Lake at the foot of Huangshan Mountain . "
