Maui Nui Botanical Garden or Kula Botanical Garden?

Hello! We’re going to drive up and do some Upcountry/Makawao exploring. We’ll walk around town, then go on to Kula, maybe stop and checkout Surfing Goat Dairy. Hopefully Jacaranda trees are in bloom already. Also stop at a garden. Which one should we do? Just looking to see beautiful tropical plants and flowers. The Maui Nui or the Kula Botanical ? Thanks!

Both the Maui Nui Botanical Garden and the Kula Botanical Garden are fantastic choices for exploring tropical plants and flowers, and each offers a unique experience. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect at each garden to help you decide which one to visit during your Upcountry/Makawao exploration:

Maui Nui Botanical Garden: Located in Kahului, this garden focuses on native Hawaiian plants and conservation efforts, with an emphasis on preserving the island's natural flora. While it’s not as "tropical" in the sense of colorful flowers and lush greenery as the Kula Botanical Garden, it is an excellent spot if you're interested in learning about the native plants of Hawaii. It has a nice walking path through the garden where you can see some rare and endangered species of plants. If you're specifically interested in seeing the Jacaranda trees in bloom, this is not the best location for that, as they are more likely to be found in other areas like Kula. However, Maui Nui is a peaceful garden with cultural and historical significance, and it's a great place to enjoy a slower pace and explore Hawaiian plants.

Kula Botanical Garden: If you're primarily looking for vibrant tropical flowers, lush greenery, and stunning views, the Kula Botanical Garden is the place to be. Located upcountry in Kula, this garden sits at a higher elevation and offers beautiful panoramic views of Maui. The garden is well-maintained and features a variety of tropical and subtropical plants, including orchids, heliconias, proteas, and jacarandas. The colorful flower displays here are definitely a highlight, making it an excellent choice if you're looking for a more visually stunning and flower-filled experience. The Kula Botanical Garden is also located near the Surfing Goat Dairy, so it's easy to combine both attractions in one trip.

  • Highlights of Kula Botanical Garden:
    • Beautiful tropical and subtropical flowers
    • Panoramic views of the island
    • Jacaranda trees (perfect for spring bloom)
    • Orchids, proteas, and other exotic plants
  • Best for: Anyone wanting a traditional "tropical" botanical garden experience with vibrant blooms, scenic views, and an easy stroll.

Which One Should You Choose? If you're looking for a more diverse and visually striking garden with lots of flowers and a quintessential tropical garden experience, I recommend the Kula Botanical Garden. It’s especially beautiful during the spring when the Jacaranda trees are in bloom. Plus, it pairs wonderfully with a visit to the Surfing Goat Dairy.

On the other hand, if you're more interested in learning about native Hawaiian plants and conservation efforts, or if you prefer a quieter, less touristy experience, Maui Nui Botanical Garden might be the better option for you. It’s a unique spot to appreciate the indigenous flora and culture of the islands.

Both gardens offer something special, so you can't go wrong either way. Enjoy your time in Upcountry Maui, and I hope you get to see the Jacarandas in full bloom!
