Family trip to Maui in early June - suggestions for must see

Hello! My family will be making our very first trip to Maui...or Hawaii for that matter... in early June. We're coming from Florida, so it'll be a haul across the country and I've planned for a day or 2 of jet lag recovery. We'll be there for 9 days. Staying in Kaanapali area. 2 kids, 14 and 11. Any must -dos that you suggest?

We're not really foodies, but rather explorers. Love the natural world, but would also love cultural and historical activities.

Thanks in advance!

Aloha! Your first trip to Maui sounds like it’s going to be an amazing adventure for your family, and June is a great time to visit! Since you're staying in Kaanapali, you're in a prime location for easy access to some of the island’s top attractions. I’ve compiled a mix of natural wonders, cultural sites, and fun family activities to help you make the most of your time on Maui.

Must-See Natural Wonders:

  • Haleakalā National Park: Start with an early morning sunrise at Haleakalā Crater. It’s an iconic experience to watch the sunrise from above the clouds. If you’re up for a more active adventure, consider the Sliding Sands Trail which leads you into the crater. It’s a unique, otherworldly experience.
  • Road to Hana: This scenic drive is famous for its waterfalls, lush rainforests, and dramatic coastlines. Make stops at Wainapanapa State Park (black sand beach), Seven Sacred Pools (Oheo Gulch), and Hamoa Beach. Be sure to pace yourself, as the drive can be long, but the views and sights are worth it. Make it a day trip or take a two-day approach, if you prefer less rushing.
  • Iao Valley State Monument: A quick but stunning hike in a lush, green valley. The Iao Needle is a must-see landmark, and it’s a great spot for a family photo. The area is also steeped in history, as it was the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai in 1790.
  • Molokini Crater: For a snorkeling experience like no other, take a boat ride out to Molokini Crater, a crescent-shaped island that’s a marine sanctuary. It’s perfect for kids and adults who want to see colorful fish, coral reefs, and maybe even sea turtles!

Cultural & Historical Activities:

  • Old Lahaina Luau: This is one of the most famous luaus on Maui. Enjoy traditional Hawaiian food, music, and hula dancing while learning about Hawaiian culture. It's a fun way for the family to experience local traditions.
  • Maui Ocean Center: Located in Ma'alaea, this aquarium is an excellent stop for kids. You can learn about Hawaiian marine life, watch sharks, turtles, and rays in large tanks, and even see a replica of a Hawaiian underwater cave.
  • Baldwin Home Museum: In Lahaina, this museum is housed in the oldest house in Maui and offers a glimpse into the island’s history, especially regarding the missionary era. It’s a low-key, informative stop that gives context to the island’s cultural history.
  • Lahaina Historic Trail: Lahaina was once the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii and is full of historical sites. You can visit the Lahaina Courthouse and the Wo Hing Museum and explore the walking trail that takes you to significant locations in the town.

Outdoor Adventures for the Family:

  • Snorkeling at Kaanapali Beach: Since you’re staying in Kaanapali, take advantage of the calm waters and great snorkeling right by the beach. It’s an easy, accessible spot for kids to explore the underwater world.
  • Whale Watching (Seasonal): If you happen to be visiting in the winter months (December through April), take a whale-watching tour. You can often spot humpback whales from shore, or you can take a boat tour from Lahaina Harbor.
  • Ziplining at Kapalua: If your kids are old enough and adventurous, try ziplining at the Kapalua Zipline course. It’s an exciting way to get a bird’s-eye view of the island’s lush landscapes.

Relaxing Beach Days:

  • Ka'anapali Beach: Since you’re staying here, be sure to enjoy this beautiful stretch of beach. It’s perfect for swimming, lounging, or just playing in the sand. There’s also the Whalers Village nearby, which has shops, restaurants, and even an interactive museum that showcases Maui’s whaling history.
  • Napili Bay: A lovely spot for families, with calm waters perfect for younger children to paddle and snorkel.

Other Tips:

  • Remember to pace yourselves, especially with the time zone change. Start with a few relaxed days of beach time or low-key activities before diving into the more adventurous hikes or road trips.
  • If you’re up for hiking, Maui has some fantastic trails for all skill levels. If your kids enjoy exploring, check out Haleakalā’s Kipahulu District or Makena State Park for some easy hikes with amazing views.

With 9 days, you’ll have plenty of time to see the highlights of Maui while still leaving room for relaxation and discovery. Maui offers a beautiful mix of cultural and natural experiences, and I’m sure your family will have a blast exploring all that it has to offer!

Have an amazing trip, and mahalo for sharing your plans with us!
