Any dog beaches?

I made reservations to stay on the island for 5 nights the week after Thanksgiving. I am excited to be traveling with my pup for the first time. He will be 13 months old at that time. I was happy to find accommodations that would allow me to bring him. However, I was just reading some reviews about the beach and learned that dogs are not allowed on it. Huge, huge bummer. Is there a designated “dog beach” anywhere on the island? Are they at least allowed on the pier? I’m going to be “working from home“ during the day, just a couple of blocks away from the beach (mostly staying in the areas as a “stop” along the way after visiting family in Florida before going home to colder weather in Ohio), but had hoped to walk to the beach in the late afternoon/evenings with him.

Tybee Island is a very dog-friendly destination in general, but the main public beach areas have restrictions when it comes to pets. Dogs are not allowed on the main public beaches during certain hours in the summer months, and in some areas year-round, so it’s important to know where you can legally take your pup.

Dog-Friendly Areas on Tybee Island:

  • North Beach (at the north end of the island): This area is generally less crowded and more permissive with dogs. Leashed dogs are often allowed to enjoy walks on the sand outside of peak summer months. November is after peak season, so it is more relaxed.
  • Dog Park: Tybee has a designated dog park located near the mid-island area, providing an off-leash option where your dog can run and socialize. This is ideal if you want some freedom for your pup without breaking any rules.
  • Boardwalks and Walking Trails: Dogs are allowed on certain sidewalks, trails, and piers when leashed. The Tybee Pier and Pavilion sometimes allow leashed dogs, but it’s always good to double-check signage on the day of your visit.

Tips for Visiting Tybee with Your Dog:

  • Keep your dog on a leash (usually 6 feet max) and bring waste bags to clean up after them, as local ordinances enforce pet waste rules.
  • Avoid the main public beach during peak hours or summer season when dogs are prohibited, but late afternoons in November are generally fine.
  • Check with your accommodation if they have nearby beach access or private areas where pets are welcome, which can be very convenient for evening walks.

In summary, while there isn’t a large “dog beach” officially designated for unrestricted off-leash use, the north end of Tybee Island, along with the dog park and some piers/walking trails, provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy time on the sand with your pup, especially during the quieter November period.
