I live in Ontario and just booked a hotel room in Atlanta through a third party online. (Adogo). On my receipt it indicated I was charged over $40 in CANADIAN tax. I’m already paying almost 19% in Georgia’s taxes (which now also includes a $5/NIGHT traveller fee.🙄). I believe Adogo is based out of Singapore. So SHOULD I be paying CANADIAN taxes on this U.S. hotel room? Thanks! Patti
No, you should not be charged Canadian taxes on your U.S. hotel room in Atlanta. Canadian taxes, such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST) or the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), generally apply to goods and services purchased within Canada, not for services or products purchased outside of Canada, including hotel stays in the U.S.
Here are a few points to consider:
If the tax charge persists, you may also want to contact your credit card company to dispute the charge, as it’s unlikely that Canadian taxes should have been applied in this situation. Additionally, the taxes you are paying in Georgia, including the 19% state taxes and $5 per night traveler fee, are separate from Canadian taxes and are entirely legitimate for a U.S. hotel stay.
In summary, Canadian taxes should not have been applied to your U.S. hotel booking, so I recommend reaching out to Adogo to resolve this issue. Safe travels!
