Using DOT

Hi all We understand Hop On Hop Off tours are popular and that DOT shuttjes have no narration but we really want to try DOT. Has anyone used this service and planned their one day walking tour with DOT. What would you recommend the first stop should be so we can park accordingly. Thanks much

It’s great that you're considering using the DOT (Downtown Transportation) shuttle service for your one-day walking tour of Savannah! While the DOT shuttles don't offer narration like the Hop On Hop Off tours, they are a great way to get around the historic district efficiently and for free, which makes them a popular choice for visitors who want to explore the area at their own pace.

Here’s some helpful advice for planning your day with the DOT shuttle service:

First Stop Recommendation:

If you're planning to explore Savannah by foot after using the DOT shuttles, I recommend starting at the Visitor Center (located on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd). It's a central spot and a great place to get your bearings. You can pick up a map of the historic district here, and the staff can provide you with additional recommendations for things to see and do. It’s also close to some key attractions like the River Street and City Market, making it an ideal first stop to kick off your walking tour.

DOT Shuttle Stops to Plan Your Day:

  • River Street: If you want to start your tour with the waterfront, hop on the DOT shuttle and stop at River Street. From there, you can stroll along the riverfront, check out the shops, and even enjoy some good food at one of the many restaurants offering views of the Savannah River.
  • Forsyth Park: Another great stop is Forsyth Park, which is one of Savannah's most famous green spaces. The iconic fountain at the north end of the park is a must-see, and the park itself is a beautiful place to walk around, especially if you enjoy the outdoors and historic landscapes.
  • Historic Squares: The DOT shuttles also have stops near several of Savannah’s famous historic squares, like Chippewa Square (where Forrest Gump sat on the bench). You can explore the squares, enjoy the surrounding architecture, and get a real sense of Savannah's charm.

Tips for Using the DOT Service:

  • Shuttle Frequency: The DOT shuttles typically run every 10 to 15 minutes, making it easy to hop on and off as you explore. They are free, so you can take your time and stop wherever something catches your interest.
  • Parking: There are parking lots and garages near the main DOT stops, so parking near the Visitor Center or River Street will give you easy access to the shuttle. However, be mindful that parking in the historic district can sometimes be limited, so arriving early is a good idea.
  • Walkability: Savannah’s historic district is very walkable, and even if you don’t use the DOT shuttle every time, you’ll find plenty of beautiful areas to explore on foot. Many of the best sights are within walking distance of each other.

Final Recommendation:

If you're aiming to walk a lot, consider using the DOT to take you to the key locations at the beginning of your day, then walk between the sights. Starting with the Visitor Center or River Street will give you a good central point to launch your walking tour from, and you can use the shuttles to hop around if needed during your day in Savannah!
