Hi,
My husband and I (30s) are flying into SAV next week and staying 2 nights before renting a car and hitting some MiLB stadiums in the Carolinas. Won't have a car for Savannah. Have a couple questions:
Thinking of doing the Savannah for Morons Trolley Tour - though not too keen on the price. Also looking at doing a free Walking Tour - is it worth doing both or will they cover the same info?
Thinking of doing the Trolley Tour on our arrival day, there is either 2PM or 4pm, would rather do the 2pm but not sure we'll make it in time, our fight doesn't land til 12:15pm. But I want to hit some Happy Hours for oysters, that finish at 6pm? Definitely think doing a Trolley Tour and Walking Tour in one day is too much.
The walking tour is either 9:30 or 12, would it be best to do the 9:30 before it's too hot outside or really doesn't make a different? Would do this the next day.
Also going to the Savannah Bananas game that day as well, first pitch is 7pm, but plaza opens at 4:30pm - I know they have a lively atmosphere going on outside before the game, how early should we arrive?
Unsure whether do a Historical Home tour?
Current rough plan:
Wed, Land 12:15pm. Uber to Andaz. Possible Trolley Tour? Happy Hour til 6pm. Check out riverfront and City Market, maybe do ferry, waving girl, Marriott here.
Thurs: Full Day. Nice breakfast, thinking; Goose Feathers. 930am Walking Tour, Lunch Zunzis, Forysth Park (unless already been to on Walking Tour), thinking of either doing SCAD (too far to walk too?) or Ownes-Thomas House, maybe take the ferry, see Waving Girl, check out JW Marriott Lobby, maybe have time for a Happy Hour, Bananas Game 7pm, maybe going to Smiles Dueling Piano Bar after
Fri: Uber to airport to pick up rental car, hit the road
Many thanks
It sounds like you have a fantastic trip planned! Here are some suggestions and answers to your questions to help you get the most out of your two days in Savannah.
Regarding the Savannah for Morons Trolley Tour, it’s a fun and informative way to get an overview of the city. However, I understand that the price can feel a bit high, especially if you’re on a budget. Since you’re also considering a free walking tour, you may want to decide if the trolley tour’s convenience (and ability to cover more ground) is worth the cost. Both tours will cover some of the same historical highlights, but the trolley will allow you to see more without walking, and it may be more comfortable if you’re not keen on walking for long periods, especially in the heat. If you’re up for it, doing both tours can provide a fuller experience, as the walking tour will dive deeper into certain areas, while the trolley will give you a good overview of the city's layout and history.
If you’re concerned about timing for the 2pm Trolley Tour after your 12:15pm flight arrival, it may be tight to make it. Assuming everything goes smoothly with your flight and you get through baggage claim and an Uber ride, you could barely make it, but you might want to consider the 4pm option as a backup, just to avoid rushing. For your oysters and happy hour plans, you could head to one of Savannah's great waterfront spots like the River Street area or the Waving Girl statue before or after your Trolley Tour, depending on timing.
As for doing the Walking Tour at 9:30am, it’s a great idea to beat the heat, especially in the warmer months. Savannah can get quite hot and humid by midday, so doing the tour in the morning will allow you to explore at a more comfortable temperature. Plus, you’ll have more energy to enjoy your lunch afterward and other activities in the afternoon. If you can’t make the 9:30am tour, the 12pm tour should still work, but it will be a little warmer, and you might need to pace yourself more in the heat.
For your Savannah Bananas game, I would recommend arriving around 4:30pm, when the plaza opens. The atmosphere before the game is lively, and you’ll have plenty of time to explore and get into the spirit of the event. The pre-game festivities are a big part of the experience, and you’ll enjoy the unique vibe of the stadium. Arriving early will also ensure you don’t miss any of the fun!
As for the Historical Home tour, this depends on your interests and time. If you enjoy architecture and history, it’s definitely worth considering. Both the Owens-Thomas House and the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace are great options and located in central areas. However, since your schedule already seems packed, you might opt for one of these if you have extra time after your Walking Tour or Bananas game. The SCAD Museum of Art is another option if you’re into art and galleries, though it might be a bit far to walk to, depending on your location.
Your rough plan looks great, and it covers a lot of the best spots in Savannah. Here’s a breakdown with a few additional ideas:
It’s packed, but you’ve definitely set yourself up for a fun and memorable Savannah visit! Enjoy your time, and don’t forget to take in all the charm this beautiful city has to offer.
