My husband and I will be in Savannah on the 4th of July. We are hoping to see some fireworks. Who has the best fireworks? We can drive to Tybee or Hilton Head if need be, or will just stay in Savannah proper if they have a good display. Not sure where to look so I thought I'd try here. Thanks in advance! :)
You're in luck—Savannah is a fantastic place to be for the 4th of July! There are several great options for fireworks, whether you choose to stay in the city or head to nearby Tybee Island or Hilton Head. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect:
Savannah: Savannah typically hosts an excellent fireworks display, usually set off along the Savannah River. The fireworks are part of the annual Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration at River Street. The historic district, especially near the waterfront, offers a great view of the fireworks over the river. The event is free and family-friendly, but it can get crowded. The best spots to watch are along River Street or from one of the nearby parks like Emmet Park, which offers a nice vantage point without being directly on the busy riverfront. If you’re staying in the city, this is probably your best bet for convenience and an iconic Savannah experience.
Tybee Island: If you’re willing to make the short drive (about 20 minutes from downtown Savannah), Tybee Island offers another fantastic fireworks show. Their Tybee Island Fireworks Show takes place on the beach at around 9:15 PM, with the fireworks launched from a barge off the coast. The beach will be packed, so get there early to find a good spot. Watching the fireworks over the ocean can be a beautiful, more laid-back experience, and the views are great. Tybee also has restaurants and bars along the beach if you want to enjoy the evening by the water before or after the show.
Hilton Head Island: If you’re looking to get out of Savannah proper, Hilton Head Island is another option for fireworks, though it’s a bit farther away (about 45 minutes by car). Hilton Head hosts multiple fireworks displays, including one at the Harbour Town Yacht Basin and another at the Coligny Beach Park. The Harbour Town fireworks are particularly popular and are set off over the water, creating a lovely view from the marina or nearby areas. If you’re in the mood for a little road trip, Hilton Head offers a bit more space and a different atmosphere than Tybee.
All three places offer great fireworks, but if you're staying in Savannah, the River Street celebration might be the most convenient and iconic. If you're looking for a quieter, scenic experience, Tybee Island is a great option, and Hilton Head offers a more secluded feel. Whatever you choose, you’re in for a great 4th of July celebration!
