One night layover hotel advice please
We arrive before noon on a Sunday in January. Flight departing next morning at 10:00. Would like to stay somewhere that allows us to maybe do a quick tour of the city but not too far away from the airport. Or any suggestions on what to do for an afternoon/ evening is appreciated. What area should we be looking at?
TIA
For a one-night layover in Atlanta, you'll want to balance convenience, comfort, and a quick city tour. Fortunately, Atlanta has a lot to offer and is well-connected to the airport, so you can easily get out and explore the city even with limited time.
Since your flight is departing at 10:00 AM, you'll want to stay relatively close to Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (ATL) to avoid any stress in the morning. Fortunately, there are a number of hotel options that are near the airport but still allow you to see a bit of the city.
Here are some suggestions for hotels and things to do during your short stay:
- Hotel Options Near the Airport: Look for hotels that are just a short ride from ATL. Many of these offer free shuttle services to and from the airport and are near major roads for easy access to the city. Some top choices include:
- Atlanta Airport Marriott Gateway: Located very close to the airport with modern amenities and a direct connection to the airport's SkyTrain, which can take you to the city's MARTA train system.
- Holiday Inn Atlanta Airport South: Another convenient option with a shuttle to the airport and nearby dining options.
- Renaissance Concourse Atlanta Airport Hotel: A more upscale option, this hotel is also close to the airport and offers great views of the runway and comfortable rooms.
- Exploring the City: Even with just a few hours, you can still enjoy some of Atlanta’s top attractions. Here are a few ideas that are relatively close to the airport and can give you a feel for the city:
- Coca-Cola Museum (World of Coca-Cola): If you're interested in history and pop culture, this is a fun, interactive museum where you can learn about the history of the Coca-Cola brand. It's a quick drive from the airport (about 20 minutes).
- Centennial Olympic Park: Located downtown, Centennial Park is a great place for a quick stroll and offers a nice view of Atlanta's skyline. It's home to the iconic "Fountain of Rings" from the 1996 Olympics and is just a short drive from the airport.
- SkyView Atlanta: If you want to get a great view of the city in a short amount of time, consider visiting the SkyView Atlanta Ferris wheel in the downtown area. It’s an easy ride from the airport and will give you panoramic views of the city.
- Ponce City Market: If you're looking for a fun, local spot to shop, eat, and explore, head to Ponce City Market. It's an old Sears building turned into a trendy food hall, shopping area, and more. It’s about 15–20 minutes from the airport by car or MARTA.
- Dining: If you're hungry, you can grab a meal near the airport or venture into the city. Some suggestions include:
- Mary Mac’s Tea Room: If you have the time and want to experience true Southern comfort food, this Atlanta institution is a must-try. It’s about 20–25 minutes from the airport.
- Six Feet Under: Located in Grant Park, it’s known for its seafood and great views. This one’s closer to downtown and is a popular spot for both locals and tourists.
- Busy Bee Cafe: A short drive from the airport, this historic spot serves classic soul food.
In terms of timing, here’s a rough plan for the day:
- Arrive in Atlanta around noon and check into your hotel.
- Take a quick tour of one or two attractions, like the Coca-Cola Museum or Centennial Olympic Park (both can be done in a couple of hours).
- Head to dinner at one of the local spots, like Mary Mac's Tea Room or Busy Bee Café.
- After dinner, if time allows, explore some local nightlife, or simply enjoy a relaxed evening back at your hotel.
- The next morning, leave early enough (since you need to be at the airport for your flight) to either grab breakfast at your hotel or at a nearby café.
Enjoy your brief time in Atlanta! It may be a quick layover, but you can definitely make the most of it and enjoy some local highlights before you head out on your next flight.
