Finalizing my October trip, questions

Yesterday, my ticket for the Balanchine ballet matinee arrived and I realized October would be here before I know it 🤯.

American Airlines now changed my flight routing to STL via DFW, rather than a nonstop from LAX. So I'll get in later on Saturday afternoon.

I've narrowed down what I hope to accomplish.

Sunday, early mass downtown at the old Basilica, walk on the riverfront, then head to the local Budweiser experience tour at 11. (I've met the teams before but want to do this since I can't make it to the farm).

After that, off to the matinee at 2:30.

Depending on the weather and how tired I am, might do boo at the zoo after the ballet.

Have researched public transportation and know how to get to/from everything. Ordering my day passes soon.

Monday, my flight leaves later in the day so figure on early mass at the new Basilica then either the zoo (if not the night before) and then check out the world chess hall of fame, and the art museum, if I have

time.

I'd like to try some toasted ravioli, any suggestions?

How long is the ride out to the airport and the university performing arts center on the metrolink? I'll be out and about but staying near the CWE.

Is the blues museum worth a visit? I'm a music teacher's kid and Dad learned about the blues during his studies at Northwestern back in the 30's, he always loved the style, and he instilled that love in me.

Anyway, suggestions and ideas welcome.

One last thing. Is it safe to ride the metrolink rail across the river to get a nighttime view of the Arch?

Your October trip to St. Louis sounds very doable and nicely packed. Staying near the Central West End (CWE) is convenient for your itinerary, as it provides easy access to the Metrolink and many downtown attractions.

Here’s some guidance and suggestions for your plans:

  • Toasted Ravioli: St. Louis is famous for this local specialty. For a classic experience, try Charlie Gitto’s on the Hill or Mama’s on the Hill. Both are in the Italian neighborhood “The Hill” and serve authentic toasted ravioli. If you prefer something downtown, Olive + Oak sometimes has a version on their menu.
  • Metrolink Travel Times: From CWE to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, the ride typically takes about 45–50 minutes on the Red Line. To reach the University City Performing Arts Center (in University City, near Washington University), you can take the Blue Line or transfer depending on exact location; travel is about 15–20 minutes.
  • Blues Museum: The National Blues Museum downtown is worth a visit if you have interest in music history. Exhibits cover the evolution of blues, its influence on rock and jazz, and have interactive elements. As a music enthusiast, you may find it engaging, but you could skip if time is tight and prioritize other activities.
  • Zoo and Boo at the Zoo: If you do the ballet in the afternoon, heading to Boo at the Zoo afterward is possible, but be mindful of timing and sunset. It’s seasonal and fun, especially if you enjoy festive events and light crowds.
  • Safety on Metrolink: Riding the Metrolink at night across the river for views of the Arch is generally safe. Standard precautions apply: stay aware, avoid empty cars if possible, and keep belongings secure. Crowded trains are best, and the view of the Arch from the Civic Center/Union Station area is beautiful at night.
  • Sunday Itinerary Tips:
    • Early mass at the old Basilica: gives a historic and peaceful start.
    • Budweiser Experience Tour at 11: ample time after mass.
    • Ballet matinee at 2:30: allow a small buffer for travel.
    • Evening Zoo visit: optional depending on energy and daylight.
  • Monday Options:
    • Early mass at the new Basilica: keep timing tight if you plan the Zoo or World Chess Hall of Fame.
    • St. Louis Art Museum: convenient if you have a couple of hours; highlights include Impressionist and Contemporary collections.

Additional tips:

  • Public transportation is good for downtown, CWE, and airport connections. Use day passes to save on multiple rides. Rideshares can supplement if you’re short on time or the weather isn’t ideal.
  • For food and quick stops near CWE: consider grabbing a coffee at Caffe Torino or a pastry at Fancy Cakes.
  • If you like nighttime photography, the Arch and riverfront offer beautiful skyline views, and a short walk near the Gateway Arch grounds is very manageable and safe.

Overall, your plan is realistic, with time for the highlights and flexibility for weather or energy levels. Focusing on mass, ballet, the Budweiser tour, and a taste of St. Louis food with optional museum stops should make for an enjoyable weekend.
