Crab!

We are staying in Cambridge at the end of August. We are looking to have local crab or seafood for dinner. Any recommendations? Will travel within 30 mins for seafood.

Cambridge, Maryland, sits in the heart of the Eastern Shore, making it a great spot for fresh crab and seafood. Late August is prime time for enjoying Maryland blue crab and other local catches. There are several excellent options both in Cambridge and within a short drive.

In Cambridge itself, you’ll find local seafood restaurants with a focus on Chesapeake Bay flavors:

  • Blue Point Coastal Cuisine: Offers a variety of seafood dishes, including crab cakes, crab imperial, and fresh local fish. The setting is casual but upscale enough for a special dinner.
  • The Crab Claw: A classic choice in St. Michaels, about a 25-minute drive. Famous for steamed crabs, crab cakes, and waterfront views. Perfect if you want an authentic Maryland crab house experience.
  • Dock Street Market & Café: Known for fresh seafood and casual dining. Offers a variety of crab dishes and local fish, often with daily specials.

If you don’t mind a slightly longer drive (within 30 minutes), there are some excellent options along the Choptank River and in nearby towns:

  • Herman’s Seafood: A no-frills local favorite offering steamed crabs, crab cakes, and fried seafood. Located in Cambridge itself.
  • St. Michaels Crab & Seafood: Offers a mix of casual dining and fresh seafood to go. Known for quality Maryland crab dishes and good views of the harbor.
  • Fisherman’s Inn or AJ’s Seafood Shack: Located near the Cambridge waterfront, these spots are praised for fresh, local seafood and a relaxed atmosphere.

Tips for enjoying crab in the area:

  • Steamed blue crabs are seasonal and at their best in late summer, so August is perfect.
  • Be prepared to eat with your hands – bring crackers, mallets, and plenty of napkins for the full experience.
  • Check if restaurants offer "half and half" options if not everyone wants to dive into whole crabs.

Overall, Cambridge and nearby towns provide a mix of casual crab shacks and slightly more refined seafood restaurants, making it easy to plan a memorable dinner with fresh, local Chesapeake Bay seafood.
