Things to see driving from Flagstaff to Page to Monument Val
Will be flying into Phoenix, then driving to Flagstaff first night mid March.
Driving from Flagstaff to Page. would like to stop at Sunset Crater, Wupatki , and Horseshoe Bend prior to entering Page. Is that doable. How long would all this take, not a rush want to be able to take in all in and enjoy it.
Already have a tour scheduled for lower Antelope canyon, maybe go to the dam afterwards..?
The next morning (2 nights in page) drive to Monument Valley with a 1pm back country tour and reservations at view.
Then off to Sedona for 2 nights Looking at Chateau Sunset (any comments on that place)
Will check Sedona forum for things to do there...
Your proposed itinerary from Flagstaff to Page and then Monument Valley is doable, but timing and pacing will be important if you want to enjoy all the stops without feeling rushed. Here’s a detailed breakdown:
Flagstaff to Page with Stops
- Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument – Plan 30-60 minutes to drive through and see the main crater and cinder fields. If you want to do a short hike like the Lenox Crater trail, add another 30 minutes.
- Wupatki National Monument – Allow at least 1-1.5 hours to explore the ruins and visitor center. The loop road is short, but the ruins are spread out and worth taking time to walk around.
- Horseshoe Bend – About 1-1.5 hours including parking, walking to the overlook (roughly 0.75 mile each way), and taking photos.
Driving distances and approximate times:
- Flagstaff to Sunset Crater: ~30 min
- Sunset Crater to Wupatki: ~15 min
- Wupatki to Page: ~2.5-3 hours, including a short detour for lunch if desired
- Page to Horseshoe Bend: ~10 min from town
Overall, you can comfortably make the stops in a day if you start early (around 7–8am). You should plan for a full day with breaks, aiming to arrive in Page by late afternoon or early evening.
Page Activities
- Lower Antelope Canyon tour – pre-booked, usually 1–1.5 hours including check-in and guide instructions.
- Glen Canyon Dam – Quick stop for viewing; 30–45 minutes should be sufficient.
Page to Monument Valley
- Driving distance: ~2 hours without stops. Since you have a 1pm backcountry tour, plan to leave Page mid-morning to allow time for sightseeing along the way if desired.
- Backcountry tour – 3–4 hours; allows you to explore parts of the valley not accessible by general access roads.
- Overnight at The View – excellent location for sunset photography and proximity to Monument Valley sights. Rooms offer stunning canyon views.
Monument Valley to Sedona
- Drive time: ~3.5–4 hours depending on stops. You might consider a quick scenic stop at Navajo Tribal Park overlooks if time allows.
- Chateau on the Sunset – generally well-reviewed for its charm, views, and proximity to Oak Creek Canyon. Great for a 2-night stay with hiking and exploring the Sedona area.
Overall, your itinerary is feasible, but starting early on your Flagstaff to Page day is key to comfortably fit Sunset Crater, Wupatki, and Horseshoe Bend without rushing. Plan for a full day of driving with several stops and allow flexibility in Page and Monument Valley for tours and rest.
