Connecting through Atlanta

Hi, I'll be flying SAS from Copenhagen, Denmark and have a layover in Atlanta for 4 hours. I've been told that there are two lines at Hartsfield, and those are the connecting flights path and the Atlanta final destination path. Well, I need to go through CBP and probably also pick up my luggage to re-check with Delta, so is it Atlanta final destination I go to? I am so confused.

My final destination is Nashville BNA

Many thanks from a newbie.

When you arrive at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) on an international flight, you'll need to go through Customs and Border Protection (CBP), as well as pick up your luggage and re-check it for your domestic flight to Nashville. Here's what you need to know:

Step-by-step Process:

  • 1. Follow the "Connecting Flights" Path: When you land in Atlanta, you should follow the "Connecting Flights" path, which will guide you to the immigration and customs area. This is the correct path even though you're technically going to a final domestic destination (Nashville).
  • 2. Go Through CBP (Customs and Border Protection): As you’re arriving from Copenhagen, you'll need to clear customs with CBP. At this point, your passport will be checked, and you may be asked a few questions about your travels.
  • 3. Collect Your Luggage: After clearing CBP, you’ll go to the baggage claim area to pick up your checked luggage, even if your bags are tagged all the way through to Nashville. This is a requirement for international arrivals in the U.S.
  • 4. Re-check Your Bags: After collecting your luggage, you’ll then need to take it to the Delta re-check counter for your domestic flight. There will typically be signs or staff directing you to the re-check area for connecting flights.
  • 5. Security Screening: After re-checking your bags, you will go through security again before proceeding to your departure gate for the flight to Nashville.

Do I need to go through the “Final Destination” Path?

No, you do not need to go through the "Final Destination" path. That path is for passengers who are not connecting to another flight but are instead exiting the airport to their final destination in the U.S. Since you have a connecting flight to Nashville, you will use the “Connecting Flights” path for your arrival and go through the necessary steps to get to your next flight.

How much time will I need?

A 4-hour layover should generally be enough time to go through CBP, pick up and re-check your luggage, and get through security for your next flight. However, keep in mind that processing times at immigration can vary, so it’s always a good idea to allow plenty of time just in case.

In summary:

When you arrive at ATL, follow the "Connecting Flights" path, go through CBP, pick up and re-check your luggage with Delta, then proceed to your gate for your flight to Nashville. You do not need to worry about the "Final Destination" path, as that is for passengers who are not connecting to another flight.

Safe travels, and enjoy your trip to Nashville!
