Between Colorado Springs and Estes Park
Any suggestions for a route between CS and EP? And things to stop and see? Heading there today. We previously stayed in Golden so we've done the things we wanted to there.
Thanks,
Diana.
Driving from Colorado Springs to Estes Park offers several scenic options, depending on whether you want the fastest route or a more leisurely trip with stops to enjoy the Colorado outdoors and small towns.
Fastest Route (Approx. 2.5–3 hours, 120–130 miles):
- Take I-25 north to US-34 west via Loveland and then into Estes Park.
- This route is straightforward, mostly highway driving, and passes through Loveland, which has art installations and a charming downtown if you want a quick stop.
Scenic Route / With Stops (Approx. 4–5 hours depending on stops):
- From Colorado Springs, take US-24 west through Woodland Park and into the Pike National Forest. Stop at the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs if you haven’t already—it’s a short detour and a stunning landscape of red rock formations.
- Continue through the scenic Rampart Range Road (CR 67) or US-24 to Divide and then connect to US-285 north through Fairplay and South Park. This offers mountain views, small historic towns, and a quieter route than I-25.
- From US-285, you can take US-34 east from Loveland into Estes Park.
Suggested Stops Along the Way:
- Garden of the Gods: Even if you’ve been before, it’s a must-see for spectacular red rock formations.
- North Cheyenne Cañon: Short hikes and waterfalls near Colorado Springs.
- Woodland Park: Small town with coffee shops, local eateries, and a good spot to stretch your legs.
- Georgetown or Idaho Springs: If you don’t mind a small detour toward the I-70 corridor, these historic towns offer charming streets and quick lunch options.
- Estes Park Visitor Center: A good first stop upon entering Estes Park for maps, trail suggestions, and local recommendations.
Tips:
- Check the weather and road conditions; mountain passes can change rapidly, especially in spring and fall.
- Leave early if you want to make multiple scenic stops along the way, as the drive can stretch longer than expected with photo ops.
- Keep snacks and water handy, especially if traveling via the smaller mountain roads where services are sparse.
Overall, if you prefer a direct drive with minimal stops, take I-25 north to US-34. If you want a more scenic, adventurous route with opportunities to explore small towns and mountain landscapes, consider US-24 through Woodland Park and South Park to connect back to US-34 into Estes Park.
