3.5 days itinerary help
We (4 adults) are flying into Denver in early November. We arrive mid morning on a Thursday and fly out Monday evening, so we have about 3ish days to do things.
We want to stay somewhere that is central to the things we think we want to do which are:
Golden, Snowmobile somewhere (Breckenridge?), the casino town (Black something?), possibly Estes or Boulder. What else would you suggest and where to stay?
With 3.5 days in Colorado and four adults, you can fit in a mix of city exploration, mountain scenery, and a bit of adventure. Since your interests include Golden, snowmobiling, a casino town, and potentially Estes or Boulder, you’ll want a base that is centrally located for easy day trips. Staying in or near Denver is convenient, though for mountain activities, an overnight in a mountain town can save driving time.
Here’s a suggested itinerary and logistics:
- Day 1 (Thursday): Denver / Golden
Arrive mid-morning. Depending on energy, explore downtown Denver first: Larimer Square, Union Station, and some local restaurants. Then drive to Golden (about 30 minutes west) for Coors Brewery tours or local history. Golden is charming with short hikes nearby like Lookout Mountain.
- Day 2 (Friday): Snowmobiling in the Mountains
Early morning drive to Breckenridge or Winter Park (2-2.5 hours). Book a snowmobiling tour—they usually provide gear and instruction, making it suitable for beginners. This will likely be a full-day activity, and you could consider staying overnight in Breckenridge or nearby to minimize back-and-forth driving.
- Day 3 (Saturday): Casino Town / Mountain Town Exploration
Drive to Black Hawk or Central City for casinos (about 1.5 hours from Denver). Enjoy lunch and the gaming experience. Alternatively, if you prefer scenic towns, consider Estes Park or Boulder for a more relaxed day. Estes Park offers the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, and Boulder has Pearl Street Mall and mountain views.
- Day 4 (Sunday): Scenic or Leisure Day
If you stayed in the mountains overnight, drive back toward Denver and stop in Boulder for lunch or a short hike (Chautauqua Park is great). If you didn’t overnight in the mountains, you could use this day for Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Denver Botanic Gardens, or a brewery tour before heading to the airport Monday evening.
Where to stay:
- Downtown Denver – convenient for food, nightlife, and central location for day trips.
- Boulder – if you prefer staying closer to mountains and enjoy a college-town vibe with good restaurants and shops.
- Breckenridge or Frisco – if you prioritize early morning snowmobiling or mountain adventures and want to minimize driving.
Other suggestions:
- Consider timing your mountain drives for morning or late afternoon to avoid heavy traffic.
- Check road conditions in November, as snow can impact travel times.
- If you’re keen on nature without heavy hiking, Red Rocks or scenic overlooks along I-70 offer breathtaking views.
- For a mix of culture and history, Denver’s museums (Denver Art Museum, History Colorado Center) are excellent options if weather limits outdoor activities.
This itinerary balances urban exploration, light adventure, and scenic mountain experiences without overloading driving time, and gives flexibility to adjust based on weather and interests.
