Whale watching Boston

My partner and I are visiting Boston on 15 November from England. We are keen to book whale watching trip but note that the whales may have started to migrate to warmer climates. Is there other marine life to see or are these trips not worth booking in November? Thanks in advance

Visiting Boston for whale watching in mid-November is possible, but it’s important to manage expectations. By this time of year, most of the North Atlantic humpback and fin whales that are commonly seen during the peak summer months have begun migrating south to warmer waters. This means sightings may be less frequent compared to the spring and summer season.

However, you can still enjoy a marine wildlife experience in November, as some trips continue to operate and may offer sightings of other marine life. The water is colder, so dressing warmly is essential, especially if you are on an open-air deck.

  • Other marine life: You may spot harbor seals, porpoises, and a variety of seabirds such as gulls and terns. Some trips may also pass by feeding areas where whales are still present, though sightings are less predictable.
  • Scenic and educational value: Many whale watching tours in November focus on the ocean scenery, marine biology information, and local ecology, making it a worthwhile experience even if whale sightings are rare.
  • Alternative tours: If your main goal is to see whales, you could consider waiting until the spring (April–October) for peak whale season. Otherwise, short harbor cruises or sightseeing cruises around Boston Harbor can also be enjoyable and provide marine life education without the expectation of spotting whales.

In summary, whale watching trips in mid-November are less likely to provide guaranteed whale sightings, but they can still be worth booking for the experience, potential sightings of other marine animals, and the opportunity to enjoy Boston’s coastal scenery. Make sure to dress warmly, check cancellation policies, and consider tours that offer knowledgeable naturalist commentary to enhance the experience.
