Places to stay in Savannah
We are going to be visiting Savannah for a few days around Christmas (husband/wife and 2 teenage kids). Any suggestions on where we should plan to stay? A hotel closer to the beach or downtown Savannah or any other areas that you would recommend? The beach would likely be cold to swim in it, but we would not mind being at the beach, but if there are more things to do in the downtown area, please provide your recommendation of the location for a hotel.
Thanks in advance.
Visiting Savannah during Christmas sounds wonderful! The city has a magical feel during the holiday season, with festive decorations, special events, and plenty of activities for families. When it comes to deciding where to stay, it really depends on what you’re looking to experience—whether it’s being close to the beach or staying in the heart of Savannah’s historic district. Here’s a breakdown of options for your family:
1. Staying Downtown Savannah
Downtown Savannah is the heart of the city and offers a lot to do, especially if you’re interested in exploring historic sites, parks, museums, and dining. This area is packed with charm, cobblestone streets, beautiful squares, and plenty of things to see and do. For your family, downtown will be the most convenient option, as most of Savannah’s popular attractions are within walking distance or a short drive away.
- The Historic District: You can stay right in the heart of the Historic District, where you’ll have easy access to Savannah’s iconic squares, Forsyth Park, and River Street. There are plenty of family-friendly hotels in this area, many of which offer a mix of comfort, charm, and easy access to attractions.
- The Kimpton Brice Hotel: Located in the Historic District, this is a family-friendly hotel with a stylish, relaxed vibe. It’s close to great dining, shopping, and attractions, and also has an outdoor pool for when the weather permits.
- The Hyatt Regency Savannah: Right on the Savannah River, this hotel offers beautiful riverfront views and is just a short walk from the shops and restaurants along River Street. It’s also close to attractions like the Savannah History Museum and City Market.
- The Marshall House: If you want a historic experience, The Marshall House is one of the oldest hotels in Savannah, located in the heart of the Historic District. It’s a lovely spot with a lot of character, and it’s perfect for families looking to soak in the history and charm of the city.
2. Staying Near the Beach (Tybee Island)
If you’re looking for a more relaxed, beachy experience (despite the cold water in December), Tybee Island is a great option. It’s about a 20-minute drive from downtown Savannah, offering a quieter atmosphere with beautiful coastal views and fewer crowds than Savannah’s bustling downtown. While swimming may not be ideal in December, the beach offers great opportunities for walking, bird watching, and exploring the local shops and restaurants.
- Hotel Tybee: This is a beachfront hotel located directly on Tybee Island. It offers family-friendly accommodations with easy access to the beach and is close to local restaurants. You’ll get that relaxed beach vibe but still be able to visit Savannah easily for day trips.
- The Beach House at the Dunes: Located on the northern end of Tybee Island, this resort offers condo-style accommodations perfect for families. It’s a short walk to the beach, and there are plenty of dining options nearby. Tybee Island also has a few historic sites, like the Tybee Island Lighthouse, which you can visit during your stay.
- Sea and Breeze Hotel: This is a budget-friendly option on Tybee Island with easy access to the beach. It’s a more laid-back atmosphere, but if you want to be close to the coast, this is a great spot.
3. Things to Do with Your Family in Savannah
Whether you choose to stay downtown or on Tybee Island, there’s plenty for your family to do during your visit:
- Forsyth Park: A must-see when in Savannah, Forsyth Park features beautiful walking paths, fountains, and plenty of space for kids to run around. It's especially pretty during the holiday season, with festive decorations and events.
- River Street: Spend some time strolling along River Street, which is filled with shops, cafes, and galleries. It’s a great spot for souvenir shopping or grabbing a bite to eat while watching the boats on the river.
- The Savannah History Museum: This museum offers a family-friendly introduction to the history of Savannah, perfect for history buffs or anyone looking to learn more about the city’s rich past.
- Tybee Island Lighthouse: If you’re near the beach, don’t miss a visit to the Tybee Island Lighthouse. It’s a fun and educational stop with panoramic views of the coast if you climb to the top.
- Christmas Lights and Events: During Christmas, Savannah is beautifully decorated with holiday lights. You can also take a Christmas tour or attend special holiday events in the Historic District or at the Savannah Theatre.
Recommendation: For your family, staying in the downtown Historic District would likely be the best choice for its convenience, variety of activities, and easy access to attractions. However, if you enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere and some quiet beach time, Tybee Island is a great alternative. Both areas offer unique experiences, so it depends on whether you want to be immersed in the hustle and bustle of the city or prefer the laid-back beach vibe while still being close enough to explore Savannah.
Hope this helps! Enjoy your trip to Savannah!
