The Ancient Ape Man Cave, located on Leigong Mountain in Tangshan Town, Nanjing, is a natural karst cave . Discovered in 1993 during quarrying, it is known as the " Gourd Cave " for its gourd-like shape . The cave is divided into six major areas: the carved spring at the entrance, the ancient human stone carving garden at the foot of the mountain, the ancient human historical materials exhibition hall, the ape man carvings on the cliff at the cave entrance, the natural karst cave landscape, and the bamboo garden leisure area.

The stalactites within the cave are diverse in shape and mature, with the red and white stalactites being particularly rare. However, the most valuable finds are two skulls dating back 580,000 to 620,000 years. These skulls confirm that this is the only complete site of ancient ape-man activity discovered in Jiangnan, dating to the same period as Zhoukoudian in Beijing. This has pushed back more than 200,000 years in the history of humankind in the Nanjing area and confirms that the Yangtze River Basin is one of the birthplaces of the Chinese nation.

Today, two or three giant bronze statues of ape-men hunting have been cast on the top of the cave mountain as a giant symbol of the Ape-Man Cave. Throughout the scenic area, small pieces of Stone Age architecture such as huts, stone tools, nest dwellings, and cave dwellings can be seen everywhere, full of a sense of history.
