Luau question

Are there any luaus that offer something other than a buffet option? We went to a luau years ago on Oahu and we had tickets for the sit down section of the luau, rather than the buffet (i.e., we had servers in our section). I was thinking of booking the one at the Sheraton, but it looks like it's only buffet. Not a big fan of buffets for all the same reasons other people don't like buffets.

Aloha! I completely understand your desire to avoid the typical buffet-style experience at luaus, especially since you’re looking for something a bit more relaxed and personalized. Fortunately, there are some luaus on Kauai that offer different dining experiences beyond the traditional buffet setup. Here are a few options you might consider:

  • Smith’s Tropical Paradise Luau (Wailua Valley): This luau is known for its more intimate, family-style dining experience. Instead of a typical buffet, guests are seated at tables, and servers bring your food to you, which creates a more personalized and comfortable atmosphere. The setting at Smith’s is also stunning, with the luau held in a beautiful garden setting, making it a unique experience.
  • Luau Kalamaku (Lihue): Another great alternative to the buffet-style luau is Luau Kalamaku. This one offers a more upscale experience with table service for the dinner, so you can enjoy your meal without the buffet lines. It’s held at the Kilohana Plantation, and the show includes impressive hula and fire dances. The food is served in courses at the table, making it a more sit-down affair.
  • The Plantation Luau at the Grand Hyatt Kauai (Poipu): This luau offers a more elevated dining experience where guests can enjoy a multi-course plated dinner served to their table. It's a bit more refined than a traditional buffet, with a focus on local flavors and ingredients. The performance is also top-notch, with traditional Hawaiian dances and music.
  • Te Moana Nui (Sheraton Kauai Resort, Poipu): Although you mentioned the Sheraton’s luau is usually buffet-style, you might want to check if they offer a special seating section or premium experience. Sometimes luaus at resort venues have an upgraded option where you can be seated in a section with servers, though it’s not always guaranteed. It’s worth inquiring directly with the resort to see if any such upgrade is available.

These luaus are great alternatives to the typical buffet setup, offering a more relaxed atmosphere with table service. Whether you prefer a garden setting, a plantation experience, or a more upscale dinner, there’s something for everyone on Kauai. I recommend calling ahead to confirm details for the best seating options and dining style that suits your preferences.

Enjoy your time in Kauai and your luau experience!
